About Us
Our Story
On February 2nd, 1981, Kelly and Sheryl Talbot opened the doors to
their new business and welcomed all who needed a good, home-cooked
meal. This small town is where they began their dream of making a place
where everyone would feel welcome.
After repeatedly being told they would never make it, Kelly and Sheryl
beat the odds and built a thriving business. When the restaurant was in its
infancy, Kelly and Sheryl worked day and night to keep it going. However,
ButterBurr’s can be measured not just by the hard work of our founders but
also by co-workers, family, and friends who have contributed to the
business.
Many wanderings here are curious about where “ButterBurr’s” came
from. Our founder, Kelly Talbot, was always fond of literature and spent
most of his youth with his nose stuck in a book. This love for stories led Kelly
to read J.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings famous trilogy, which led to the
discovery of Barliman Butterbur.
Barliman was a kind-hearted man who owned an inn (The Prancing
Pony) within the small village of Bree. He spent his days welcoming patrons
from across Middle Earth. Barliman was notorious for his unbelievably lousy
memory. Poor Barliman Butterbur could only remember his name because
his patrons were always calling his name Barliman Butterbur. At (The
Prancing Pony) everybody knew everybody, especially Barliman. Kelly
strived to achieve the same standard, always ready to tend to his loyal
patrons. Let’s say this is how the name stuck!
Sadly, Kelly passed away during the summer of 2020. However, his
love, knowledge, and hard work for the business will never be forgotten. His
wife, Sheryl, has since retired, and her eldest daughter has proudly
continued her family’s legacy.
In January of 2023, ButterBurr’s was given the chance for a fresh start
to move and own their building. Sheryl and their daughter decided to
relocate to the iconic castle of Pocatello. However, they feel more at home
than ever! It must’ve been fate, on account of Kelly and Sheryl meeting in
this very building back in the 70s! Knowing Kelly would be ecstatic about
the parallels between the castle and his favorite trilogy, they felt secure in
their decision.
What was once a small-town restaurant with humble beginnings has
become a booming business and a second-generation family legacy!
